2017 Korea-Vietnam Forum for the Future Held in Vietnam
The inaugural Korea-Vietnam Forum for the Future was held in Hanoi back in 2012 in accordance with the agreement made in the same year to build a dialogue channel between the two countries’ leaders to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and Vietnam. The two countries have taken turns hosting the forum since their first gathering.

Marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, this year’s forum was themed around the promotion of a strategic cooperative partnership between the Republic of Korea and Vietnam. Participants spoke on the past 25 years of R.O.K.-Vietnam relations, the enhancement of political and economic cooperation and bilateral relations, as well as social and cultural cooperation and the promotion of people-to-people exchange. They placed a special focus on identifying specific ways to improve bilateral relations as agreed in the R.O.K.-Vietnam summit meeting on November 11, 2017.

From the Korean side, a total of 18 leading figures participated in the forum. They included Lee Sihyung, president of the Korea Foundation; Jeong Yang-seok, lawmaker and member of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee; Shin Yoon-hwan, director of Sogang University’s Institute for East Asian Studies; Lee Hyuk, R.O.K. ambassador to Vietnam; Park Noh-soo, the first R.O.K. ambassador to Vietnam; Lim Hong-jae, former R.O.K. ambassador to Vietnam; Lee Jae-hyon, senior fellow at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies; Kwon Yul, vice president of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy’s Asia-Pacific Department; Ryu Hang-ha, president of the Association of Korean Entrepreneurs in Vietnam; Koo Sung-yeal, professor emeritus at Yonsei University; and Jung Tae-sun, president of CJ E&M Vietnam.

From the Vietnamese side, around 20 leading figures attended the forum. They included Nguyen Xuan Thang, president of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat; Nguyen Quang Thuan, president of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences; Vu Khoan, former deputy prime minister; Vu Tien Loc, president of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Pham Quang Minh, rector of Vietnam National University–Hanoi’s University of Social Sciences and Humanities; Nguyen Vu Tung, president of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam; and Nguyen Phu Binh, the first Vietnamese ambassador to the Republic of Korea. The Korean and Vietnamese delegations found it especially touching to witness the joyful reunion of the two countries’ first ambassadors.

With 2017 marking the third such meeting, the Korea-Vietnam Forum for the Future has strengthened its position as a comprehensive dialogue channel for the two countries’ high-ranking officials and experts in various sectors to discuss the development of bilateral ties.
