KF-VUB Korea Chair Established at VUB, Belgium
The Korea Foundation and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB, Free University of Brussels) have successfully established the KF-VUB Korea Chair, the first ever Korean studies chair in Europe. Dr. Ramon Pacheco Pardo, senior lecturer in international relations at King’s College, has been named the inaugural holder of the KF-VUB Korea Chair.

To celebrate the launch of the Chair, a ceremony was held at BOZAR, the Center for Fine Arts in Brussels, on October 17, 2017.

Opening remarks for the ceremony were delivered by Karel De Gucht, president of the VUB Institute for European Studies; Lee Sihyung, president of the Korea Foundation; and Sonja Snacken, vice rector for international relations at VUB. Former South Korean Ambassador to Belgium and the EU Ahn Chong-ghee delivered congratulatory remarks, and Secretary General of the European External Action Service Helga Schmid made a keynote speech.

In addition, a roundtable discussion was held on the theme of “Security on the Korean Peninsula: What Role for Europe?” with the participation of Kim Hyoung-zhin, South Korean ambassador to Belgium and the EU; Ramon Racheco Pardo, KF-VUB Korea Chair; and Reinhold Brender, head of the European External Action Service’s Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Division.
