The invited guests were policy experts in their 30s and 40s, specializing in East Asian affairs at influential think tanks with significant impact on U.S. foreign policy, including the NBR, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), known for its world-renowned foreign policy quarterly “Foreign Affairs,” and the Arms Control Association (ACA). The delegation also included junior-level faculty members at Harvard University, Indiana University and Georgetown University in the fields of government, East Asian international relations and security studies.

Led by David Straub, a renowned American expert on Korean issues who is currently a Sejong-LS Fellow at the Sejong Institute in Korea, the delegation participated in a one-week visiting program as part of the NBR Next-Generation Policy Network. David Straub was previously in charge of Northeast Asian affairs while serving for three decades at the U.S. State Department. He played a key working-level role in the Six-Party Talks on North Korea’s nuclear program and in 2009, he accompanied former U.S. President Bill Clinton when he visited North Korea to negotiate the release of detained American journalists. From 2008 to 2016, he served as Associate Director of the Korea Program at the Stanford Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC).

During their stay in Korea, the group of U.S. policy experts attended a roundtable meeting organized by the Sejong Institute and visited the National Assembly; the Ministry of Defense; the presidential residence, Cheonghwadae; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and the DMZ to hold in-depth discussions with Korean experts and high-ranking officials.
