Field Research Fellowship

Overview

For the purpose of promoting research in Korean studies abroad, the KF Fellowship for Field Research has been established to provide eminent Korean studies scholars abroad and experts in relevant fields with the opportunity to conduct on-site field research in Korea and access to resource materials.

Eligibility

Overseas researchers of Korean studies or Korea-related comparative/case studies in the fields of humanities or social sciences who fall under one of the following criteria:
(1) Doctoral candidates who have completed their requisite coursework and are in the process of writing their doctoral dissertation
(2) Lecturers or researchers with a minimum of five years of teaching or research experience at a university or a research institute
(3) Assistant professors or individuals currently in a professional/research field with a minimum of ten years and less than 20 years of career experience (※ Doctoral degree holders only)
(4) Full professors, associate professors or individuals currently in a professional/research field with at least 20 years of career experience (※ Doctoral degree holders only)
※ Although related to Korea, research on topics of natural science or engineering is not supported.

Visit to Korea for field research and collection of resources materials

Number of Awards

Approximately 30 per year

Support Details

Monthly stipend of KRW 2,000,000 to KRW 3,000,000 according to research experience

Fellowship Period

Minimum one month to maximum twelve months
※ The length of the fellowship period to be determined basically by applicants

Reminders

- Applicants must be able to conduct research in Korean or English.
- Applicants with Korean citizenship must have permanent residency status in a foreign country.
- Individuals who correspond to any of the following profiles are not eligible.
> Those who major in natural science, medical science or engineering
> Those who are currently studying or conducting research in Korea
> Those who seek to improve their Korean language ability or enroll in a regular degree course in Korea
> Those who received fellowships from the Foundation or other Korean organizations within the past three years
- The Foundation may adjust the fellowship period originally requested by applicants.
- Applicants are required to consult affiliated institutions for the arrangement of accommodations and research facilities.
※ The Foundation does not provide accommodations to fellowship recipients.
- Applicants must complete basic research/literature review in their home country and write a thesis during their stay in Korea under the fellowship program.
- Fellowship recipients may not receive concurrent scholarship support from other Korean organizations. When they receive concurrent support, the Foundation will cancel its support.

Responsibilities of Fellowship Recipients

- Doctoral candidates
(1) must submit a report, using the Foundation's report form, prior to the end of the fellowship period, and
(2) must submit their doctoral dissertation and obtain a doctorate within two years after the end of the fellowship period.
- Faculty members
(1) must submit a report, using the Foundation's report form, prior to the end of the fellowship period, and
(2) must publish an article in an A&HCI/SSCI journal or academic journal registered in their respective country's ministry of education within a year after the end of the fellowship period, or publish a book within three years after the end of the fellowship period.

※ The Foundation annually monitors fellowship recipients' research achievements for three years after the end of the fellowship period. When fellowship recipients fail to fulfill their responsibilities after the end of the fellowship period, the Foundation may restrict its further assistance to them.
※ Provision of incentive: A certain amount of incentive is provided to fellowship recipients who publish an article in A&HCI/SSCI journals within a year or a book/monograph within three years after the end of the fellowship period.
