George Washington University to Offer a Major in Korean Language and Literature
Encouraged by the Korea Foundation's support for a Professorship in Korean Studies, George Washington University in the United States has announced it will begin to offer a major in Korean language and literature starting from September 2019.

The major in Korean language and literature to be opened this year includes a wide range of required courses on Korea-related subjects from advanced Korean to Korean literature, culture and history. It is expected to provide American students who have become interested in Korea through the Korean Wave with an opportunity to develop a deeper and more academic understanding of the country.

George Washington University was Washington, D.C.'s first institution of higher learning to open both a Korean language course (1983) and a Korean literature course (1999). It has offered a minor in Korean language and literature since 2000. While Chinese and Japanese studies programs have long offered both major and minor courses, the Korean studies program at George Washington University is a relative latecomer. Along with the establishment of the GW Institute for Korean Studies in 2017, the first-ever Korean studies center at a university in Washington, D.C., the opening of the major program in Korean language and literature this year is expected to add strength to George Washington University's Korea-related research and education, thereby fostering youth well-versed in Korean affairs in the heart of American politics and diplomacy.

To promote Korean studies and open a major in the discipline, the Korea Foundation has provided support to George Washing University for the establishment of endowed professorships in Korean history, politics, literature and culture, and the organization of Korea-related conferences since 1999. In consideration of Washington, D.C.'s importance in the field of public diplomacy, the Korea Foundation plans to continue to work closely with the university to advance Korea-related research and education.
