Jamia Millia Islamia Opened Undergraduate Degree Program in Korean Language in 2019
In October 2019, Jamia Millia Islamia opened a regular undergraduate degree program in Korean Language, the second of its kind in India.

Established by Islamic nationalist leaders in 1920, encouraged by Mahatma Gandhi’s call to boycott the colonial government’s educational institutions, Jamia Millia Islamia is today regarded as one of the top three universities in New Delhi, along with the University of Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University. The news about the opening of the Korean language degree program attracted great attention as the university is one of the most prestigious universities in India. A total of 538 students applied for admission to the inaugural program, and 30 of them were eventually admitted.

Since 2017, the Korea Foundation is dispatching a visiting professor in Korean language education to Jamia Millia Islamia, and since August of last year, the KF also provides additional support to the university for the employment of two local instructors. In doing so, the Foundation has made a significant contribution to laying the groundwork for the opening of the undergraduate program.

Prior to the opening of the Korean language degree program, Jamia Millia Islamia had offered Korean language education as credit courses for certificate, diploma, and MBA programs as well as for programs at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. The opening of the undergraduate program in Korean Language is now offering intensive Korean language education and contributes to the popularity of Korean culture.

The Korea Foundation will continue to offer a diverse array of support to promote Korean studies at Indian universities, including at Jamia Millia Islamia.
