2019 KF Special Lectures on Korean Studies in Southeast Asia
In the second half of 2019, the Korea Foundation organized “KF Special Lectures on Korean Studies” at eight universities in Viet Nam, Thailand and Indonesia, countries of importance for South Korea’s New Southern Policy.

The lectures in Viet Nam were delivered by Ambassador (ret.) Im Hong-jae, then serving as executive director of the ASEM Global Ageing Center, and Professor Kim Ki-chan of the Catholic University of Korea (CUK). From September 23 to 25, they spoke on multiculturalism in South Korea and South Korean enterprises, respectively, at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology. In Thailand, on October 11 and 12, Professor Chung Byung-mo of Gyeongju University, Professor Min Byoung-won of Ewha Womans University and Professor Lee Kwan-min of Nanyang Technological University of Singapore spoke on Korean folk painting, inter-Korean relations, and South Korea’s IT industry, respectively, at Silpakorn University and Burapha University. In Indonesia, Professor Kim Andrew Eungi of Korea University delivered a lecture on South Korean popular culture at Binus University on October 31, and Professor Kim Ki-chan on South Korean enterprises at Pasundan University and the Indonesian University of Education on December 4.

The lectures were a great success, with an overall attendance of 1,850 people proving once more the interest in Korea in these countries. The lectures were offered either in English or Korean with consecutive interpretation into the respective local languages. This enhanced the delivery of the speakers’ messages, increasing the audiences’ understanding and resulting in impressively active participation from the floor.

In accordance with the South Korean government’s New Southern Policy, the Korea Foundation will continue to increase exchanges with India and ASEAN member countries and take the lead in promoting Korean studies there.
