The symposium began on Friday, September 30 with the opening ceremony followed by a keynote speech by Kim Youngna, Professor Emerita of Seoul National University and former Director of the National Museum of Korea. She spoke on exhibition and education programs at Korean art galleries outside of Korea.

Then followed the first session on "Acquisition: Sustainable Korean Arts," and the second session on "Exhibition and Education: Creative Ways to Promote Korean Arts." The experts on Korean and Asian arts from all around the United States made presentations and had discussion on each topic.

In order to promote Korean arts in the United States, the symposium participants examined new trends in art market, discussed ways to build networks among curators, and also visited Korean art galleries in New York area.

The Korea Foundation has hosted the Workshop for Korean Art Curators in Korea annually since 1999 to enhance overseas Korean art curators' understanding about Korean artifacts and culture.

The symposium aimed at re-examining the significance of and seeking new directions for the Foundation's Workshop for Korean Art Curators which had been held 17 times in total so far. Especially, it was meaningful to hold the symposium in the United States which houses the second-largest number of Korean artifacts outside of Korea, next to Japan, and has relatively many Korean collections at museums. The symposium also served as an occasion to find out changes in American art market environment and trends of Korean arts, and anticipate the direction of future development of Korean arts.
